2007 The mildest winter in the UK since 1914. Followed by the warmest April on record. A long period of warm temperatures (May 2006 - May 2007)breaks many records (see opposite). In Southport from May 2006 to 21st January 2007 no ground frost occured, except briefly in early November.
2006 Many records broken, 19 th July is the hottest day on record, 36.5 in Surrey, 33.9 in Southport. July is the hottest on record. and September the warmest for over 100 years The Summer and Autumn are the warmest on record.
2005 January. Carlisle flooding the worst in 50 years. 90mm of rainfall in one storm. Winds in north Scotland reach 106 m.p.h. In June Severe flooding also hits north Yorkshire villages.
2000 The United Kingdom had its wettest Autumn on record.
1988 January , floods in Leyland town centre,Lancashire.
1987 October. The worst storm to hit the south of Britain for 300 years. Just short of Hurricane force causing widespread damage and leaving 17 dead.
1986 March.The strongest gust ever recorded of 173 mph was on the summit of Cairngorm during this month. At lower levels in Scotland 110 mph gusts ocurred.
1981 The lowest December temperature on record was recorded in Shawbury, Shropshire at minus 27.2 C (also in 1995). Previous records for the midlands area were broken by 3 or 4 degrees.
1975 Late March brought heavy snow along the coastal areas of Merseyside and Cheshire. During a rare snow- thunderstorm and for a few minutes, snow flakes fell in Widnes that were about 9 inches accross , probably a record . On the 2nd June some parts of Britain had a cold day with sleet and snow, with midday temperatures of 2C.
1965 A cold spell in early March brought very heavy snowfall to areas of north wales . Even coastal areas like Anglesey and the Conway valley experienced deap drifts said to have been visible in some sheltered areas until the last days of May.

1956 A very cold February starting on the 1st. Temperatures plunging from 6C to about minus 4 C by the end of the day and drizzle turning to light snow, this caused car locks to freeze up and power blackouts.
1955 Mid January. Heavy snowfall in Lancashire caused severe drifting with 5ft drifts reported in Blackpool
1952 March 29th .A sudden cold spell with 70mph winds hit mainly Southern England with snow drifts up to 8 ft deep blocking roads and trapping motorists.
1947 From late January to Mid March it was the snowiest winter of the Century with drifts in the Pennines of 20 feet. March being the snowiest with rainfall records of 300% of average leading to flooding as snow started to melt. Scotland having its coldest March of the Century.
1940 January was the second coldest month of the century (1963 the coldest). Heavy snow covered Scotland and northern England with ten foot drifts in Bolton.Towns and villages were cut off . In Blacksnape nr Darwen food was supplied through bedroom windows.Further south freezing rain caused widespreed glaze up to 3 cms thick , bringing down overhead lines and tree branches. Further snow covered the glaze in some areas ,this glaze persisted for about a week.
1919 September. Snow covered the hills of Northern England and North Wales. The earliest date seen in recent history.
1917 The coldest April on record the central England average was 5.4 C snow fell even late in the month
1916 March . During the last few days of March a severe blizzard hit the Midlands and Southern England 27 cm of snow lay in some parts but the huge drifts caused blockage to roads and railways so that in sheltered hilly areas of the Southwest snow was still seen in June.
1908 April. Some of the deapest snow reported in any month occured in Southern England . Berkshire 69cms and the Channel Islands had a foot of snow, rapid thawing caused flooding.
1904 November . Northern England and Scotland experience blizzards with snow of up to 46 cm in some areas. This cold spell , from the 20th, brought storm force winds and a low of -11C in the midlands .

February 2014 :
The Jet stream seems to have been stuck in the same position for almost two months over the UK, especially Southern England. So that by Mid February we have already received the Wettest winter for over 250 years. Vast areas of Somerset under water for months so that the land may be ruined for some time.
January 2014 :Most of the USA has been hit by severe low temperatures, with Heavy snow affecting the North East with high winds causing huge wind chills and the lowest temperatures for 20 years (minus 37C.). Later in the month the same weather pattern repeats again and again.
In the UK storms and flooding, especially in the SE and Somerset- where they Army is called in. The Wettest in England for over 100 years but the wettest on record in Southern England.
December 2013: Early snow and ice hits as far south as Texas. Dallas especially has severe ice and record lows. Snow over the Syria and Jordan area and for the 1st time for 112 years in parts of Egypt where up to 15 inches falls.
The Christmas Eve storm caused damage and flooding in Southern England. Off Scotland the lowest pressure for 127 years was 936.4 mb.
November 2013 : Philippines - said to be Bedlam after a force 5 strike. Described as the biggest storm to have hit the Earth since reliable records began. Over 6000 deaths

October 2012 : On the U.S North East Coast a cat. 1 Hurricane gives the lowest pressure ever recorded in that area( 940 mb) and in terms of area and impact the largest " Superstorm " ever to hit the NE States. 60 million people affected. Massive flooding including some Manhattan underground stations. 100 homes burnt down or destroyed in New York/ New Jersey and many damaged, 107 people killed. The President declares " A Major Disaster ". Ironically Hurricane Sandy blows in deep sand onto the streets. Several feet of snow on higher ground. Some scientists blame sea level rise but others claim there has been no increase for 50 years.

2012 . First October snowfall in parts of Australia for a Century. Although the Antartic has produced a record high level of ice this year experts dismiss this as temporary; and that by 2020 snow will disapear from the Australian lower Alpine area. Climate will have to move along pretty quickly then ?
